General Guidance

Make sure your mask is covering your nose and mouth!

If double masking, the MOST protective mask/respirator should be worn closest to your skin, with the least protective outside.

Any respirator can be fit tested. Fit testing is the ONLY way to know that your respirator fits without leaks. Feel free to email hopesmedics@protonmail.com if your organization would like to fit test your members' masks.

DO NOT buy respirators from Amazon. A large percent of the ones sold there are counterfeit and not actually very effective.

The most important part is not WHICH country's standards your mask complies with, but that it's not counterfeit and actually complies with A standard.

Masks from Most to Least Protective

N100/P100/R100

These respirators filter at least 99.97% of particles 0.1 to 0.3 µm.

P3

These respirators filter at least 99.95% of all particles that are 0.3 µm in diameter or larger.

N99/P99/R99, FFP3

N99/P99/R99 respirators filter at least 99% of particles 0.1 to 0.3 µm

FFP3 respirators filter at least 99% of particles 0.3 µm in diameter or larger

N95/P95/R95, DS2/RS2, KN95

These respirators filter at least 95% of particles 0.1 to 0.3 µm.

FFP2/P2, KF94

FFP2 & P2 respirators filter at least 94% of all particles that are 0.3 µm in diameter or larger.

KF94 respirators filter at least 94% of particles with an average diameter of 0.4 µm

FFP1/P1

These filter at least 80% of all particles that are 0.3 µm in diameter or larger. Hope's Medics does NOT know if this is sufficient to protect against Omicron as this is not a standard filtration percentage in the US.

Surgical Mask

These are not protective enough for Omicron. Surgical masks may be worn OVER a respirator to help keep the respirator clean. Do not wear it under the respirator as that will make the respirator less effective. If you need free respirators, contact a mutual aid group in your area, many are distributing free respirators

Cloth mask

These are not protective enough for Omicron. This is true regardless of how many layers the cloth mask has. Cloth masks may be worn OVER a respirator to help keep the respirator clean. Do not wear it under the respirator as that will make the respirator less effective. If you need free respirators, contact a mutual aid group in your area, many are distributing free respirators.
